5 Stars Excellent field dressing instructions
I’m sure the recipes are also good, but the first thing I reviewed was the field dressing instructions. They are excellent. I’ll never do squirrel the same way again & my last deer dressed far easier than ever before. Highly recommend this book.
4 Stars Preparing Fish and Wild Game–Review
This book is more than a cookbook. I could call it the bible on Wild Game preparation. Admittedly, not all forms of game common in North America is included. But the book does include the common forms of wild game, big game, and more improtantly, how to clean/dress the meat.
The cleaning/dressing of the meat is included in the back of the book. There are well detailed colour photographs to assist the novice with the steps. Once one has an idea on how to dress game or clean fish, the idea of hunting or fishing becomes more exciting. By properly preparing the meat from the get-go, one has greatly improved the possibility of a truly extraordinary meal preparation. For those who have not had the priveledge of a father or a loved one who could show one “the ropes” on dressing game or cleaning fish, this book is indispensible. For those who have had the priveledge, this book is a great refresher course. This book makes a great gift either way.
The book also includes techniques on how to clean Northern Pike and remove the “Y” bones. These bones are most troubling. Instructions are included for other fresh water fish including bullheads and catfish.
The recipes are first class and include delictable photographs. I have not tried all of the recipes, but just reading what one can do with fish and wild game makes one salivate.
Our grandparents and great grandparents may have eaten this way, but much of this experience has been lost through the generations. One cannot obtain most of these meats at the local grocery store, for instance. After obtaining one’s Fish and/or Wild Game, one can have in mind the terrific recipe that he/she will try. This book is a book of fine cuisine, and is by no means “The Road Kill Grill”. You even get the per-serving counts of calorie, protein, cholestrol, carbohydrate, etc., not to mention the “Exchanges”.
My only problem that I found with this book is the cooking time/temperature for the Canada Goose recipe on Page 190. The 425 is just too high and the 35 minutes is too short. The meat was not done after 35 minutes, and when it was done, it was tough. It tasted great, however, with no “gamey” flavour. I plan to try 325F and 2 hours next time.
Because of this experience, I regret to give this book a “4″. I still highly recommend “Preparing Fish and Wild Game” because it is extremely difficult to find such a wealth of knowledge in one place.
5 Stars Always a winner!
We’ve tried close to half of the recipes in this book, and they are always wonderful! We’ve never had a bad one. Our friends are always asking us for the fish and venison recipes.
5 Stars Must have!
Great resource for skinning and dressing game (especially great for beginners wh want to see photos of where to cut). All the recipes we have tried are excellant. My 12 year old son cooks from this book all the time! If you hunt, you need this!
5 Stars Wild Game Cooking Made Easier
My finance is an avid hunter of game and wild birds, but I’m a complete novice when it comes to cooking it. So I bought this book to help guide me. I think it’s both an extraordinary cookbook and a topnotch reference guide, and should be a definite addition to any game cook’s library. The photos are wonderful, the recipes are easy to follow, and there’s a range of easy, intermediate, and difficult recipes to try. A wide range of game, wild birds, and fish are included, so there’s usually a recipe for the type of food you have.
Clousers Flies Tying And Fishing the Fly Patterns of Bob Clouser

Clousers Flies Tying And Fishing the Fly Patterns of Bob Clouser

Clouser’s approach to fly design begins and ends onstream, with a lot of time spent in between at the workbench. Careful observation of the behaviour, habitats, and physical features of the foods fish eat is essential to developing a fly that looks and acts like the real thing. But the pattern must also pass rigorous standards of durability, ease of casting, and most importantly, consistently catching fish before it can be called a winner. Including variations on his famous original Deep Minnow, Clouser presents recipes for seventeen of his most successful patterns for baitfish, subsurface freshwater foods, and surface flies with detailed explanations and superb full-colour photographs to accompany every step. In sections devoted to materials and tying techniques, Clouser offers insight into his methods and provides a solid foundation for designing flies with confidence.

4 Stars outstanding
Well illustrated. Full of good techniques addressing a wide range of “Clouser’s” for a variety of fishing.
5 Stars Clouser’s flies
Flies like the Clouser minnow are well known and easy to tie, I
was interested to see how the man himself tied his flies.
The good photographs and step-by-step instructions make it easy to duplicate the patterns correctly.
Since these patterns are so succsesfull in both fresh- and saltwater I
regard this book as a must have for any flyfisherman.
5 Stars Clousers Done Right
I fish specs and reds in the flats, and when I’m not throwing top water, I’m using a Clouser…this book has led me to experiment with other than the Clouser standards with great success. The book is well written and the photography of the flies is superb. Glad I added it to my fly library, it certainly will be a classic.
5 Stars fly tying tutorial

My husband is reading this book (I bought it as a present for him), and I know it’s good because he spends time EVERY night pouring through the pages, comparing notes with other books, and planning his next hunt.

5 Stars First class read for every elk hunter
As a fellow author and elk hunter I try to read everything I can get my hands on, on the subject of elk and elk hunting. Theodore Roosevelt said,” People who love the outdoors should be omnivorous readers. If so, they have the best of two worlds. They learn more-and enjoy life more.”
Bob Robb’s, The Ultimate Guide to Elk Hunting is a must read for elk hunters of all skill levels.

5 Stars Perfect for your bass fisherman!
I gave this book to my son - he is not a reader but he is really into bass fishing. He had read it from cover to cover in one day! Yeehaa! I am so glad to have him reading! And he is practicing alot of VanDam’s methods! Praying for a win at his state tournament in March!
5 Stars Good Stuff!!
The info in here is good for anyone new to the sport. I have heard that color was important with the bait, but KVD explains why they matter and how to determin what to do if something is not working. I am not done with the book yet, but what I have read is very useful. I wish I could say that using some of his tactics has helped me land a lot of fish, but it has not. I used one of the top water hints that he gives and hung a fish that broke off my 12 pound floracabon line! If you use the book, invest in good line. He may not get you more fish, but he fished for the big ones and helps you do that. I did put a trailing hook on a buzz bait from his suggestion and landed a fish with that hook. He missed the first hook!! Also tried using a spinner bait in ways that he talks about in the book. Caught my first small mouth (3 pounder) and a 2.5 pound large mouth today with his tricks with a spinner… Can’t wait to finish the book, but I am trying to absourb all that I can as I go through it.
4 Stars Kevin VanDam
Secrets of a Champion by Kevin VanDam is a fairly good read. What is especially beneficial is that, where many other bass books are filled with
“southern” tactics and patterns, Van Dam, a Michigan native, refers to patterns, lures, etc which are helpful to “northern” anglers.Of course there still are alot of southern and western tactics, etc, at least he recognizes the “north” and this is nice for a change. His ideas depart somewhat from other anglers in being more modern in their approach.
They must work as a brief glance at his record shows that he is very successful on tour. The only complaint would be that the book is to short and is a little soft on equipment selection, although these are covered better in his other book.
5 Stars Must Have Books
If you don’t have these books your not catching all the fish you should. This guy knows how to catch fish and lets you in on all of his secrets. Must have book if you are serious about bass fishing.
5 Stars Great Book
This is a great book if you want to get more bass in your boat. This is written by one of the greatest anglers of all time Kevin VanDam. I would strongly recomend this book. The first time I went out after reading this book I was able to catch more fish. Everything you need to know from tuning lures to selecting the right equipment is in this book. One of the best books out there.
The Complete Kayak Fisherman
August 2, 2009 by Fishing News · Leave a Comment

In saltwater and fresh, kayaks are the hottest craft for fishermen. Inexpensive and versatile, they enable fishermen to reach waters and fish that cannot be reached otherwise. This book delivers all the practical knowledge the beginning kayak fisherman needs to know, from outfitting the kayak to spefic angling techniques.
User Ratings and Reviews
4 Stars Very useful, to a newby like me.
I feel that the info’ in this book will at least stop me from looking stupid when I get out on the water. The info’ on the anchor was very useful but I had to go to another place to find out how to rig the anchor so that it wouldn’t get caught permanently on some bad thing down at the bottom.
4 Stars Good Book for Saltwater Kayak Fishermen
This book is fine for someone who primarily fishes saltwater and wants to modify their kayak. I intend to buy a fishing kayak pretty much all set up and I’m primarily a freshwater fisherman so I didn’t find the book as helpful as I would have liked. That’s not taking away from the author or the book. There is some good basic information about personal flotation devices and other safety features that anyone can use. Not sure what I expected to find. Maybe my expectations were all wrong.
5 Stars A GREAT BOOK!
In my area, we don’t have a local Kayak Shop to rely on for information, advice, and guidance. This book does all of that and more if you are interested in the sport of kayak fishing!
Whether you are a novice or an experienced yak fisherman, this book is a great read to make you an even better kayaker. It reads as if you are talking with a pro inside a kayak shop. It was so informative and laid out in such a way, that I highlighted stuff in my personal copy! This will help me find key knowledge later after I am through reading it. My personal highlighting is also complimented by a great index by the author to find those “juicy” tid-bits.
This book helped me choose gear, install accessories, and learn some great techniques & safety principles. Although he does not say this is the best kayak, piece of gear, etc., he guides you to some better brands and helps you make knowledgeable choices by imparting his own experience and expertise. He tells you what to look for, what to avoid, and encourages you to not make the mistakes he made (i.e. going cheap the first go around - only to buy more pricey (better) stuff later, thus costing you more.)
He compliments this by brining in subject matter experts from companies that produce paddles, kayaks, GPS systems, etc. This is a BIG PLUS! Hear it from him…..hear it from those who make/develop this stuff!!!
I love the underlying theme woven throughout the book - SAFETY & BEING PREPARED! Being a Boy Scout leader, these two principles are near and dear to my heart!
I definitely give this book a 5 star rating - it is a must read for any kayak fisherman. My son will be obligated to read it before he assumes control of his new yak received at Christmas. In my area, we don’t have a local Kayak Shop to rely on for information, advice, and guidance. This book does all of that and more if you are interested in the sport of kayak fishing!
5 Stars The Complete Kayak Fisherman
A very well written book and a must have for anyone just starting out in the sport. All the subjects that appear on the various discussion boards are addressed with good illustrations and clear directions.
4 Stars The “Almost” Complete Kayak Fisherman
Ric Burnley’s book is fantastic! Throughout this well written book he carefully describes in detail all things relevant to choosing, rigging, paddling, and fishing with a heavy emphasis on safety. Clearly the best kayak book I’ve read and since I’m new to this sport I’ve read several that don’t come close to explaining facets of the game that both beginners and advanced yak fishermen will need to know. My only criticism is that when describing regional differences, there is absolutely no mention of kayak fishing in Hawaii, which can be a different challenge althogether. We have a rapidly growing kayak fishing community out here and it was completly overlooked.
